Srinagar, Feb 17:
The crescent moon marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan for 1447 AH has been officially sighted in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Consequently, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, will be observed as the first day of Ramadan across the Kingdom.
The moon-sighting process commenced shortly after sunset in the eastern provinces of Saudi Arabia, in line with established religious practice. The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia had earlier called upon Muslims throughout the country to observe the Ramadan crescent on 29 Sha’ban 1447 AH, corresponding to February 17, 2026, as per the Umm Al Qura calendar. Citizens were urged to report confirmed sightings to the nearest court to ensure official verification.
Following confirmation of the sighting, fasting will formally begin at dawn on Wednesday. The announcement sets the spiritual tone for millions of Muslims preparing to observe a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and charity.
Religious authorities in the United Arab Emirates and several other Middle Eastern countries are also expected to issue corresponding announcements in alignment with the Saudi declaration.
With the commencement of Ramadan, Taraweeh prayers will begin Tuesday night, as worshippers gather in mosques for the special nightly congregational prayers that continue throughout the sacred month.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, holds immense religious significance for Muslims worldwide, symbolising devotion, self-discipline, and spiritual renewal.
