Examiner Bureau | Gulmarg, Feb 23:
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday underscored the urgent need for artificial snow generation in Gulmarg to safeguard winter sports and sustain tourism, warning that climate variability poses a growing threat to traditional winter games in the region.
Addressing the inauguration of the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg, the Chief Minister welcomed athletes from across the country and stressed the importance of adapting to changing weather patterns.
He noted that snowfall in recent years has become increasingly unpredictable, affecting the planning and smooth conduct of winter sporting events. “We can no longer rely solely on natural snowfall. Long-term planning requires us to consider artificial snow generation to ensure consistency in winter sports,” he said.
Climate Challenges and Tourism Impact
The Chief Minister said climate variability has compelled authorities to rethink the future of winter sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized that developing artificial snow systems is essential to protect the region’s position as a premier winter destination.
While acknowledging that concerns may arise regarding artificial snow projects, Abdullah said the larger objective is to prevent disruptions to tourism and protect livelihoods dependent on the winter season.
“Thousands of stakeholders — including hoteliers, guides, transport operators, ski instructors and small business owners — depend on a successful winter season. We must take practical steps to ensure stability and growth,” he said.
Vision for Global Skiing Hub
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to promoting Gulmarg as an international skiing destination, the Chief Minister said sustained investment in infrastructure and athlete support will help the region compete with global winter sports hubs.
He assured participants that the administration would extend every possible support to athletes and sports infrastructure, encouraging the emergence of more international-level competitors from Jammu and Kashmir.
Congratulating ace skier Arif Khan for bringing laurels to the region, Abdullah expressed confidence that the Khelo India platform would inspire more young athletes to excel on national and international stages.
He added that participation in sports is as significant as winning medals, stating that consistent investment in winter sports and tourism will not only enhance Gulmarg’s global standing but also ensure long-term economic stability for local communities.
