Agencies | New Delhi, Feb 24:
In a major boost to rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, Northern Railway has announced the extension of the Vande Bharat Express service to provide direct connectivity between Srinagar and Jammu from March 1, 2026.

According to an official communication, the SVDK–SINA–SVDK Vande Bharat Express, which was earlier operating between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, will now be extended up to Jammu (Jammu Tawi). The extension will come into effect from March 1.

With this move, passengers will be able to travel directly between Srinagar and Jammu without the need to disembark at Katra, significantly improving convenience for daily commuters, tourists, and business travellers.

Increased Coach Capacity

In anticipation of rising passenger demand, railway authorities have also enhanced the composition of the train. The service will now operate with a 20-coach rake, replacing the existing 8-coach configuration. The decision reflects growing reliance on high-speed rail connectivity between the Valley and the Jammu region.

Officials said the expansion aims to ensure smoother travel, greater seating availability, and an improved onboard experience.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity

The extension of the Vande Bharat service is seen as a key step toward strengthening intra-regional connectivity and integrating Jammu and Kashmir more closely with the national railway network. It is also expected to provide a substantial boost to tourism, trade, and inter-regional mobility.

Railway authorities stated that the enhanced service underscores their commitment to modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly transportation solutions in the Union Territory.

Further operational details, including revised schedules and stoppages, are expected to be issued shortly.
