Examiner Bureau | Srinagar: Waheed Ur Rehman Para, leader of the People’s Democratic Party, on Thursday criticised the Jammu and Kashmir Government over what he termed an inadequate response to the recent developments involving Iran, questioning why the Cabinet had not issued a clear condemnation resolution.
In a post on social media, Para said that Farooq Abdullah, president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, had urged the Government of India to clarify its stand on the reported US–Israel attack on Iran, but noted that the appeal came days after the strikes.
Para also questioned the stance of the Jammu and Kashmir administration led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, stating that the government had not issued a strong condemnation of the attack.
“What is troubling is the silence of J&K’s own government. Instead of calling out Israel’s attack clearly, the statement described the incident merely as a ‘recent development’,” Para wrote.
He further asked why the issue had not been formally discussed in the Cabinet. “If the government truly stands with the people, why not pass a clear and official resolution through the Cabinet?” he said.
Para also questioned why discussions on the matter were held at the Nawa-i-Subh Complex — the National Conference headquarters — instead of an official government forum.
The PDP leader added that, as the head of India’s only Muslim-majority region, the Chief Minister had an opportunity to demonstrate “moral clarity and solidarity” with the victims of the conflict.
His remarks come amid widespread reactions across Kashmir following the escalation in the Middle East. Several parts of the Valley witnessed protests and shutdowns after reports of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader during the conflict.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, however, had earlier expressed concern over the developments in Iran and appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to maintain calm and restraint.
