Agencies | Ahmedabad: India national cricket team created history on Sunday by becoming the first host nation to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on home soil. India defeated New Zealand national cricket team by a massive 96-run margin in the final played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

With the victory, India achieved a historic milestone in the tournament’s history. Since the inaugural edition in 2007, several nations had hosted the T20 World Cup, but none had managed to lift the trophy while playing as hosts.

Despite advantages such as familiar playing conditions, home venues and strong crowd support, host nations had repeatedly fallen short of winning the title. India’s triumph in the 2026 edition finally broke that long-standing trend.

Prior to this, the best performance by a host country came in 2012 when Sri Lanka national cricket team reached the final while hosting the tournament. However, Sri Lanka finished runners-up after losing to West Indies cricket team.

The 2026 tournament, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will be remembered as the edition that ended the host nation’s long wait for a title victory, with India scripting a historic moment in front of a jubilant home crowd.
