Examiner Bureau | Jammu:

Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary escaped unhurt after a gunman allegedly attempted to open fire outside a marriage hall in Jammu on Wednesday night, officials said.

The accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi, was quickly overpowered by security personnel present at the venue and later taken into custody for questioning.

According to officials, the incident occurred in the upscale Greater Kailash Jammu area when Abdullah and Choudhary were leaving a marriage function.

Authorities said the suspect, believed to be in his seventies, was waiting outside the venue and allegedly attempted to fire at Abdullah. Two police personnel—an inspector and a sub-inspector—immediately intervened and restrained the accused. However, he managed to fire a single shot before being completely disarmed.

No injuries were reported in the incident, officials confirmed, adding that the accused was allegedly in an inebriated condition at the time of the attack.

Abdullah and Choudhary had attended the function to greet National Conference leader B. S. Chouhan on the occasion of his son’s marriage.

Police have taken the accused into custody and initiated further investigation into the incident.
