In a major strategic move amid escalating tensions with Iran, the United States has approved arms deals worth over $23.5 billion for its Gulf allies, including a $16.5 billion package and an additional $7 billion sale to the United Arab Emirates.

The approvals, announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, were fast-tracked through emergency waivers, bypassing the usual congressional review process. Washington cited rising security threats and recent attacks on energy infrastructure as the primary reason behind the move.

Strengthening Gulf Defences

The $16.5 billion package is aimed at reinforcing air and missile defence systems across key regional allies. The UAE is set to receive advanced radar systems, counter-drone technologies, air-to-air missiles, and upgrades for its F-16 fleet. Kuwait will be equipped with high-speed missile tracking radar systems, while Jordan will receive aircraft and munitions support.

In addition, a separate $7 billion deal for the UAE includes sophisticated defence systems such as Patriot missile interceptors and Chinook helicopters, further enhancing its military capabilities.

Strategic and Economic Gains

While the US has positioned these deals as essential for regional security and deterrence, analysts say they also deliver significant economic and geopolitical benefits to Washington.

Major defence firms such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and RTX Corporation are expected to secure multi-billion-dollar contracts, boosting the US defence industry and sustaining domestic manufacturing.

Experts note that such large-scale arms exports also strengthen long-term military dependence of allied nations on US technology, training, and maintenance systems—enhancing Washington’s strategic leverage in the region.

Impact on Global Energy and Security

The ongoing conflict has already driven global oil prices higher, benefiting the US as a major energy producer. Increased exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have further strengthened America’s position in global energy markets, particularly as disruptions affect supplies from the Gulf.

At the same time, the integration of advanced defence systems across Gulf nations is expected to create a coordinated security network aligned with US interests, aimed at countering threats from Iran.

Concerns Over Escalation

While US officials maintain that the deals are meant to enhance deterrence and stability, critics warn that continued militarisation could deepen regional tensions and prolong the conflict.

With the Iran war intensifying, the arms agreements highlight a complex mix of security priorities, economic interests, and geopolitical strategy shaping Washington’s role in the region.
