Agencies | Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday described Iranians as “lousy fighters but great negotiators” while commenting on ongoing efforts to reach a peace agreement with Tehran amid the continuing West Asia conflict.

Speaking at his first cabinet meeting since the outbreak of hostilities last month, Trump claimed that US military operations are progressing significantly ahead of schedule. He noted that the initial estimate for achieving strategic objectives was between four to six weeks, but substantial progress has already been made within 26 days.

“We estimated it would take approximately four to six weeks to achieve our mission. Twenty-six days in, we are far ahead of schedule,” Trump said, expressing confidence in the pace of operations.

The US President also reiterated his call for Iran to take his proposed 15-point peace plan seriously, warning that time was running out for Tehran to reach a deal. Despite Iran reportedly rejecting the proposal earlier, Trump claimed that the country is seeking negotiations to end the conflict.

He further asserted that Iran’s top leadership has been significantly weakened and claimed that the country would have developed nuclear weapons if not for US intervention. At the same time, Trump criticised NATO allies for their limited involvement in the conflict, stating that the United States often supports its allies but does not receive similar backing in return.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the region, with diplomatic efforts continuing alongside ongoing military operations.
