Examiner Bureau | Srinagar: At least seven people were killed and five others injured after multiple avalanches struck the Srinagar–Leh National Highway on Friday, trapping several vehicles under heavy snow between Zero Point and Minimarg, officials said.

The avalanches, which occurred in the afternoon hours, hit a vulnerable stretch near Zojila Pass, a high-altitude corridor known for frequent snow slides during winter months. The sudden onslaught left vehicles buried under debris, triggering panic among commuters.

Rescue teams were immediately pressed into action, launching an intensive operation to locate survivors, retrieve bodies, and clear the highway. Efforts are ongoing to remove snow and restore traffic movement along the strategic route connecting Kashmir with Ladakh.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh expressed grief over the loss of lives, confirming the casualties in a post on X. “Saddened to learn about the tragic death of 7 persons and injuries to 5 after an avalanche hit a vehicle at Zojila Pass. My sincere condolences to the bereaved families,” he said.

He further assured that all necessary medical assistance is being provided to the injured, as authorities continue rescue and relief operations in the area.
