Examiner Bureau | Jammu: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday said that the Jammu Marathon stands as a powerful symbol of the transformation Jammu and Kashmir has undergone since 2019, highlighting the Union Territory’s emergence as a hub for global sporting and cultural events.

Speaking at the felicitation ceremony held at MA Stadium, Sinha stated that peace, prosperity and improved governance have created enabling conditions for hosting world-class events. “After seven decades, Jammu and Kashmir is claiming its rightful place on the global stage,” he said.

The first-ever International Half Marathon in Jammu, organised by the Tourism Department, featured 21 km, 10 km and 5 km race categories and witnessed participation from over 3,000 runners, including athletes from across India and abroad. Terming the marathon a historic milestone, the Lieutenant Governor said the event has firmly placed Jammu on the global running map and is expected to boost tourism, trade and local businesses.

Drawing a parallel between marathon running and the region’s development journey, Sinha remarked that progress in Jammu and Kashmir has been achieved “one step at a time,” leading to a new identity rooted in stability and growth. He added that the success of such events reflects the Union Territory’s readiness to host international marathons, cricket tournaments and other global engagements.

Highlighting the broader vision, Sinha credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for enabling Jammu and Kashmir to showcase its vast tourism potential on the world stage. He noted that long-standing aspirations of the people are now being realised through sustained development and renewed public confidence.

The Lieutenant Governor also emphasised the role of sports in driving social change, stating that initiatives like the Jammu Marathon are fostering a culture of fitness and contributing to a growing sporting revolution in the region under the “Fit India” movement.

The event was attended by senior officials, including Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma and Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, along with noted personalities such as Milind Soman and Gul Panag. A large number of sportspersons, youth and citizens also participated in the ceremony.
