Examiner Bureau | Kulgam:
A mother and her son sustained serious injuries after a bear attacked them in the Gujjar Basti Lammer area of Qazigund in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday, officials and local sources said.
The injured have been identified as Raqiya, wife of Bashir Ahmad Chechi, and her son, Saqib Ahmad Chechi, residents of Chechi Mohalla in Gujjar Basti Lammer.
According to local sources, the duo was attacked by a wild bear, leaving both severely injured. Soon after the incident, local residents rushed to their aid and shifted them to a nearby healthcare facility for immediate treatment.
Following preliminary medical care, both patients were referred to Emergency Hospital Qazigund for specialised treatment. However, due to the seriousness of her injuries, Raqiya was subsequently shifted to Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, for advanced medical care. Her son continues to undergo treatment.
The incident has triggered concern among residents, who said that increasing movement of wild animals in the area has become a growing threat to public safety.
Locals urged the Wildlife Department to take effective preventive measures to minimise human-wildlife conflict and ensure the safety of people living in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
