The President of India has appointed Justice Sanjeev Kumar, a Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The appointment was made under Article 223 of the Constitution of India, according to an official notification issued by the Union Government. Justice Sanjeev Kumar will assume the responsibilities of Acting Chief Justice following the appointment of Justice Arun Palli, the incumbent Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
The move ensures continuity in the administration and functioning of the High Court until a regular Chief Justice is appointed.
Justice Sanjeev Kumar, who has been serving as a Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, brings extensive judicial experience to the position. His appointment comes in the wake of Justice Arun Palli’s elevation to the Supreme Court, marking a significant development in the higher judiciary.
The notification stated that the President exercised the powers conferred under Article 223 of the Constitution, which provides for the appointment of an Acting Chief Justice when the office of the Chief Justice of a High Court falls vacant or when the Chief Justice is unable to discharge the duties of the office.
