Examiner Bureau | Jammu:
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested an assistant engineer of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Works Department (PWD) after allegedly catching him red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹30,000 to process compensation for a house damaged during a Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) road project in Doda district.
In a statement, a CBI spokesperson said the accused was posted as an assistant engineer with the PWD and was associated with the implementation of PMGSY projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the spokesperson, the CBI registered a case on July 16, 2026, following a complaint alleging that the complainant’s house was damaged during the construction of the PMGSY road connecting Thathri and Kathawa in Doda district. The damage reportedly made the complainant eligible for compensation of around ₹10 lakh.
The investigation revealed that the accused allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹50,000 to process and facilitate the release of the compensation amount. After negotiations, the bribe amount was allegedly reduced to ₹30,000.
The spokesperson said the CBI laid a trap on July 16 and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the ₹30,000 bribe. Further investigation into the case is underway.
