Union Minister Prahlad Joshi was on Saturday assigned the additional charge of the Ministry of Education following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from the post.
Joshi, who currently serves as the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, will oversee the Education Ministry in addition to his existing responsibilities.
In a communiqué, Rashtrapati Bhavan said the President, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had accepted Pradhan’s resignation with immediate effect.
“The President, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has directed that Shri Prahlad Joshi, Cabinet Minister, be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Education, in addition to his existing portfolios,” the communiqué said.
Pradhan tendered his resignation earlier in the day following student protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party across the country, which demanded his removal over the NEET paper leak controversy.
Announcing his decision, Pradhan said the resignation was “not a matter of individual prestige” and that he was deeply disturbed by the developments of the past several days. He maintained that the interests of students and the nation must take precedence over personal considerations.
