Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has confirmed that he will participate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as an overseas player from the 2027 season after acquiring British citizenship, while remaining non-committal on the possibility of playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Speaking on the sidelines of The Hundred, where he is representing Trent Rockets as a domestic player, Amir said his new citizenship has changed his status in franchise cricket but declined to speculate on an IPL appearance.
When asked about his participation in the PSL from 2027 onwards, Amir replied, “I’ll play as an overseas player.”
However, when questioned about the IPL, the 34-year-old offered a brief response, saying, “Uska kuch nahi pata” (“I don’t know about that”).
Amir acquired British citizenship through his wife, Narjis Khan, enabling him to qualify as a domestic player in England’s county and franchise competitions. As a result, he no longer occupies an overseas player slot while featuring in English tournaments.
While British citizenship alters his eligibility in several franchise leagues, it does not automatically ensure participation in the IPL. Although there is no formal rule barring Pakistani players from the tournament, no Pakistan cricketer has featured in the IPL since the inaugural 2008 season, with franchises having refrained from signing them amid longstanding political and diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan.
Amir recently represented Nottinghamshire’s Notts Outlaws in the T20 Blast before joining Trent Rockets in The Hundred, both as a domestic player.
The left-arm pacer retired from international cricket following the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, bringing the curtain down on a career in which he represented Pakistan in 36 Tests, 61 One-Day Internationals and 62 Twenty20 Internationals. Despite his retirement from international cricket, Amir continues to be a sought-after player on the global T20 franchise circuit.
