A major security alert was triggered in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district early Friday after a suspicious SUV allegedly breached a police security checkpoint at Chanderkote and fled towards the Nashri area despite repeated attempts by security personnel to stop it.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. when a Scorpio vehicle bearing registration number JK02AK-1743 was travelling from Srinagar towards Jammu.
Police personnel deployed at the Chanderkote security naka signalled the vehicle to stop for checking. However, the driver allegedly ignored the instructions and sped away, prompting an immediate pursuit.
Sources said police fired three rounds in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle, but it continued towards the Nashri area, triggering a large-scale search operation involving the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Army.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramban, Arun Gupta, who reached the spot to oversee the operation, said the vehicle was subsequently intercepted and seized near Dalwas.
“The district police have seized the suspicious Scorpio near Dalwas, and further investigation is underway. Detailed information will be shared as the investigation progresses,” the SSP said.
Following the incident, security forces intensified search operations in the surrounding areas and stepped up surveillance along the highway and adjoining routes.
Police said the motive behind the driver’s attempt to evade the checkpoint has not yet been established, and all possible angles are being investigated. Further details are awaited.
