The bodies of two men who drowned in the Chenab River while bathing were recovered on Wednesday, four days after they were swept away by strong currents, officials said.
The deceased were identified as 30-year-old Gajay Singh and 35-year-old Rakesh Singh, both residents of the Khour area of Akhnoor.
According to officials, the two men had gone to bathe in the Chenab River near Hamirpur-Sidhar village on August 9 when they were caught in the strong current and swept away.
A search operation was launched immediately after the incident, with rescuers and local authorities conducting searches along the river.
Gajay Singh’s body was recovered from the river in the morning, while Rakesh Singh’s body was traced later in the evening following sustained search efforts.
The bodies were subsequently handed over to the respective families for the last rites.
On the day of the incident, rescuers had recovered a motorcycle, two mobile phones and clothes belonging to the victims from the riverbank, officials said.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with bathing in the Chenab, particularly during periods of strong currents and changing water levels.
