Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, Sujit Kumar, on Friday said that anti-militancy operations remain the force’s “first priority” and will continue to receive the highest focus, while appealing to the public to cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace and law and order across the Valley.
Speaking to reporters during his maiden ground visit in Srinagar after assuming charge, Kumar reviewed security arrangements and inter-agency coordination in view of the Friday congregational prayers.
Responding to questions about the recent increase in counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir, the IGP said such operations have consistently remained a priority for the police.
“Our operations were the first priority in the past, and they remain the first priority today as well,” Kumar said.
He said several operations had been conducted across Kashmir in recent days, during which security forces made significant recoveries.
During his Srinagar visit, Kumar also assessed coordination between the police and other security agencies at locations where large congregations were expected for Friday prayers.
“I joined you yesterday, and today we are here first to assess the coordination of our police team and other agencies,” he said, adding that similar arrangements were being reviewed at other locations in Srinagar witnessing large gatherings.
The IGP also greeted the people on the occasion and appealed for their cooperation in maintaining peace and law and order. He acknowledged that security measures could sometimes cause inconvenience to commuters, particularly on days when large congregations are held.
“Many people are offering prayers today, so we seek your cooperation. We understand movement is difficult for the public,” he said.
Kumar assured residents that the Kashmir Zonal Police remains committed to ensuring their safety and security.
“I congratulate everyone and want to assure the people that the Zonal Police is always there for you,” he said.
Kumar assumed charge of the Kashmir Police establishment on Thursday evening, succeeding his predecessor as the new head of the Kashmir Zone.
