Examiner Bureau | Jammu:

The investigation into the alleged rape and subsequent death of a 15-year-old girl in Kishtwar district has been transferred to the Crime Branch for a comprehensive probe, officials said on Saturday.

The teenager was allegedly raped by her schoolteacher over a period of several months and died on August 20 during a pregnancy termination procedure, according to officials.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the police has so far arrested six persons in connection with the case, including the alleged accused teacher and a nurse.

The transfer of the investigation to the Crime Branch comes amid demands for a prompt and thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the alleged sexual assault, pregnancy and subsequent death of the minor, along with strict action against all those found responsible.

Inspector General of Police, Crime Branch, Sarah Rizvi, confirmed that the agency had received communication from Police Headquarters regarding the transfer of the case.

“We are in the process of taking over the case,” Rizvi said.

The Crime Branch is expected to examine the circumstances of the alleged sexual assault, the medical treatment provided to the victim and the events leading to her death, besides scrutinising the evidence and roles of those already arrested.

The case remains under investigation.
