The Delhi Directorate of Education has announced a holiday on Friday, September 11, for all its offices and schools across the national capital in view of the 18th BRICS Summit and the extensive security and logistical arrangements being made ahead of the international event.
The holiday will apply to government schools and recognised unaided private schools in Delhi.
India is scheduled to host the 18th BRICS Summit from September 12 to 13 as it assumes the grouping’s chairmanship. The summit is expected to bring together leaders of BRICS member countries for discussions on economic cooperation, trade, development, technology and global governance.
The high-level gathering is also expected to result in heightened security measures and traffic restrictions across parts of the national capital, prompting the Directorate of Education to declare the holiday.
BRICS is a grouping of emerging and developing economies that cooperate on economic, political and diplomatic issues. It is not a military alliance or a treaty-based organisation and does not have a permanent secretariat or independent budget. Its chairmanship rotates annually among member countries, with decisions generally taken through consensus.
The grouping seeks to strengthen the collective voice of the Global South in international affairs and has advocated reforms in institutions including the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank and World Trade Organization.
India’s 2026 chairmanship comes amid significant geopolitical and economic shifts globally, with the country expected to emphasise resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability during its presidency.
The New Delhi summit will provide India an opportunity to advance its priorities, deepen engagement with emerging economies and strengthen cooperation on issues of shared global interest.
