Handwara: Police on Wednesday claimed to have busted a terror module allegedly being operated by an ex-militant in a hybrid mode in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
According to a police handout, Handwara Police received reliable information regarding the activities of an ex-militant allegedly functioning as a hybrid militant for the banned terrorist organisation Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) in the Handwara-Kupwara area.
Acting on the input, police, along with personnel of 21 Rashtriya Rifles and 92 Battalion of the CRPF, launched a joint operation at an identified location in Handwara town and apprehended the accused, police said.
The arrested person was identified as Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohd Sultan Bhat, a resident of Kruhmura, Handwara.
Police said a Chinese-made pistol, two magazines and 16 rounds of pistol ammunition were recovered from his possession during the operation.
According to the police, Bhat is an ex-militant who had previously been arrested in two cases.
A case, FIR No. 232, has been registered at Police Station Handwara under relevant provisions of law, officials said.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the alleged module’s wider network, identify other possible associates and establish the nature and extent of its activities, police said.
