The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Secretariat has admitted a private member’s resolution moved by MLA Javid Hassan Baig, seeking to keep the proposed Baramulla–Uri railway line alignment from Kanispora towards Khanpora/Sheeri in abeyance pending an independent geological, geotechnical and seismic assessment of the proposed corridor, officials said on Saturday.
The resolution calls for a comprehensive evaluation of slope stability, soil bearing capacity, seismic vulnerability, drainage conditions and landslide susceptibility before the alignment is finalised.
According to a communication issued by the Assembly Secretariat, the resolution states: “This House expresses serious concern over the proposed alignment of the Baramulla-Uri Railway Line from Kanispora towards Khanpora/Sheeri and resolves to urge the Government of India that its finalisation on the said stretch be kept in abeyance pending a comprehensive and independent geological, geotechnical and seismic assessment of the proposed corridor.”
In view of the concerns raised, the resolution urges the Government of India to undertake a comprehensive and independent geological, geotechnical and seismic investigation of the proposed corridor at the earliest.
It further calls for a detailed assessment of slope stability, soil bearing capacity, liquefaction potential, seismic vulnerability, drainage conditions and landslide susceptibility along the proposed alignment.
The resolution also seeks that the alignment be finalised only after competent technical authorities establish and certify the geological and structural suitability and long-term safety of the proposed corridor.
