The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was adjourned for 30 minutes on Friday after BJP members protested against the reference to the 2000 autonomy resolution in Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resolution seeking restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
The disruption occurred during discussion on Abdullah’s resolution, which calls for the “immediate and urgent” restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory.
BJP legislators entered the Well of the House and raised slogans, including “Jahan hua balidan Mukherjee, woh Kashmir hamara hai” and “Jo Kashmir hamara hai, woh saara ka saara hai.”
National Conference members defended the reference to the earlier autonomy resolution, maintaining that the party would continue to pursue what it considers the rights and interests of Jammu and Kashmir.
As the protests continued, members from both sides raised competing slogans, disrupting proceedings in the House.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather intervened and appealed to members to maintain order. However, the continued commotion prompted him to adjourn the Assembly for half an hour.
The reference to the 2000 autonomy resolution has emerged as a contentious issue during the discussion on the statehood resolution, with BJP members questioning its relevance to the demand for restoration of full statehood.
