A 45-year-old head constable of the Chandigarh Police was allegedly shot dead inside his government accommodation in Sector 22 on Friday, with police arresting his 18-year-old son, Armaan, in connection with the case.
The deceased, Nitin Singh, was posted in the accounts branch at the Chandigarh Police headquarters. He was found with a gunshot injury to his head at the residence. A country-made pistol was recovered from the house and police have also invoked provisions of the Arms Act.
According to the preliminary investigation, the incident followed an altercation between Nitin and his son on Thursday evening. Police said Armaan wanted to marry his girlfriend immediately, while his parents had asked him to wait until he turned 21.
Sector 17 SHO Sudesh Kumar told PTI that Armaan had been pressuring his parents to bring the girl to their home and had also been demanding money for his needs. The disagreement allegedly escalated before the shooting.
Police said Armaan also allegedly confronted his mother after the shooting and grabbed her by the neck. She managed to escape to the rooftop and raised an alarm, following which neighbours intervened and alerted the police.
Investigators are also examining an alleged attempt to mislead them about the incident. Police said Armaan initially sought to portray the shooting as the work of an unidentified person who had entered the house.
The accused was subsequently arrested and is expected to be produced before a court, with police seeking his remand for further investigation, including to establish how he obtained the country-made firearm.
Police are also examining Armaan’s previous involvement in a fatal road accident case. Earlier this year, he was arrested after a Thar allegedly driven by him was involved in a collision that killed two brothers near the Kalagram light point in Manimajra. He was later released on bail.
The investigation into the shooting is continuing, with police examining the sequence of events inside the residence, the recovered weapon and the circumstances surrounding the family dispute.
