Drinking water supply has been temporarily suspended or severely affected across several parts of Ganderbal district following a possible breach in the Sindh Extension (SE) Canal that has caused a significant drop in water discharge.
The advisory was issued by the Executive Engineer, Jal Shakti (PHE) Division, Ganderbal, who said the disruption would continue until necessary repair work on the canal is completed. The department has advised residents to conserve water and use available stored supplies judiciously during the interruption.
The affected areas include Ganderbal town, Sherpathri Block and adjoining areas such as Chundina and Shalbugh, besides Dagpora, Gadoora and Kujar.
Water supply is also expected to be affected in Tulmulla, Dangerpora, Lar, Larson, Dumbkadel and adjoining habitations, along with Benhama, Wayil, Nunner and Babosipora.
Other areas listed in the advisory include Sehpora/Serch, Baderkund, Arch, Nagbal, Rangil, Darind and Malshahi Bagh.
The Jal Shakti Department said emergency tanker services would be made available to residents requiring drinking water during the disruption.
The department expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the public and said normal water supplies would be restored once the required canal repairs are completed.
The latest disruption comes against the backdrop of continuing concerns over reduced discharge in the Sindh canal system. The government has previously acknowledged that shortages in the Sindh Extension Canal during the peak irrigation season can affect drinking-water availability in parts of Ganderbal and Srinagar. The canal system serves as a major source of raw water for several treatment plants and water-supply schemes.
