Examiner Bureau | Srinagar:

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday criticised the BJP over a proposed move to introduce uniform Friday sermons across mosques in the Union Territory, accusing the party of interfering in the religious affairs of Muslims.

In a post on X, Abdullah urged the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board chairperson to immediately halt the initiative, describing it as unacceptable.

“This is an unacceptable attempt by the BJP to interfere in the religious affairs of Muslims and will not be accepted under any circumstances. The BJP-appointed Chairperson must immediately halt this misplaced attempt to please her masters,” Abdullah wrote.

The proposed mechanism envisages determining Friday sermon topics in advance, with the subjects to be approved by a committee of preachers.

If implemented, Jammu and Kashmir would become the first region in the country to introduce such a system, according to the report.

The proposal has drawn criticism from Abdullah, who has called for the initiative to be stopped, arguing that it amounts to interference in Muslim religious affairs.
