National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday said that the people’s mandate in the recently declared election results across four states and one Union Territory must be respected, expressing hope that the newly elected governments would prioritise public welfare.
Speaking to reporters at Charar-i-Sharief in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, Abdullah said the verdict reflects the will of the people and should be accepted in the true spirit of democracy. “New governments have come in; may they work for the welfare of the people. This nation belongs to all of us, and it must progress collectively,” he said.
On the upcoming Panchayat elections, Abdullah stated that the NC is fully prepared to participate and is awaiting the official notification. He described Panchayats as a vital pillar of democracy that plays a crucial role in grassroots development.
Highlighting local issues, the NC chief raised concerns over the condition of the Khanqah project at Charar-i-Sharief. He said the project was initiated during his tenure in 1996 but alleged that subsequent modifications weakened the structure. He claimed that poor construction quality and structural flaws have rendered the first floor unsafe for prayers.
Abdullah further noted that despite expert recommendations, necessary corrective measures were not undertaken. He urged the present administration to intervene and ensure the renovation and completion of the project.
He also flagged infrastructure issues at the Pakherpora Shrine, stating that the area around the newly constructed mosque requires immediate attention.
