Examiner Bureau | Srinagar:

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday firmly dismissed speculation about possible defections from the National Conference (NC), asserting that not a single MLA from his party would switch sides to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Speaking to reporters in Tangmarg, Omar termed the reports “baseless and without substance,” making it clear that the NC remains united and politically stable. “There is no question of any of our MLAs defecting. These rumours have no credibility,” he said, seeking to put an end to ongoing political speculation.

Responding to questions regarding the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Chief Minister alleged that the party had previously extended support to the BJP during the Rajya Sabha elections. He claimed that this had been established through information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, indicating that the political narrative being pushed by opponents lacks consistency.

Omar Abdullah also underscored the autonomy of his administration, stating that his government functions independently and does not take directions from any external entity. “We speak for ourselves and act on our own decisions. The government is accountable to the people, not to any other organisation,” he said.

On the issue of tourism, the Chief Minister highlighted that the reopening of tourist destinations is being handled in a phased and calibrated manner. He noted that the matter had already been discussed in the Assembly and several destinations have been reopened, with others expected to follow gradually to ensure safety and preparedness.

When asked about a possible cabinet expansion, Omar maintained a cautious stance, saying that any decision in this regard would be taken “at an appropriate time,” without offering a specific timeline.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid heightened political activity in the Union Territory, with parties positioning themselves ahead of upcoming developments, even as the government seeks to project stability and continuity in governance.
