A sudden surge in the Sukhnag stream caused significant damage to infrastructure at Beerwah in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, washing away the Sukhnag diversion and partially damaging a newly constructed bridge, officials said on Tuesday.
According to authorities, the flash rise in water level is suspected to have been triggered by a cloudburst or an intense localized downpour in the upper catchment area. The sudden influx of water swept away the diversion structure and caused damage to portions of the newly built bridge, disrupting connectivity in the area.
Officials said the water level has since receded by nearly three feet, reducing the immediate threat. However, assessment of the damage is underway, and the concerned departments have been directed to restore the affected infrastructure and monitor the situation closely.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on the stream and have urged residents living along vulnerable stretches to remain vigilant, particularly in view of the prevailing weather conditions.
