Jammu and Kashmir is likely to experience widespread rainfall and thunderstorms over the next two days, with isolated spells of heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds expected in several parts of the Union Territory, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, has forecast widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions on September 1, indicating a period of heightened weather activity across the region.
According to the forecast, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely in Kashmir on August 31 and September 1. In the Jammu division, isolated heavy rainfall is expected during the same period, along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
The weather department has cautioned that intense spells of rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides and mudslides, particularly in vulnerable and hilly areas.
Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor weather updates, especially during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. People living in landslide- and flash-flood-prone areas have been urged to exercise additional caution.
The advisory assumes significance as several parts of Jammu and Kashmir remain vulnerable to sudden weather-related disruptions, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas.
The intensity of weather activity is expected to gradually decline from September 2, although rainfall will continue in several areas.
Kashmir is likely to receive fairly widespread rainfall on September 2, while scattered rainfall is forecast in the Jammu division.
From September 3 to 5, rainfall activity is expected to become more limited, with isolated showers likely in Kashmir and scattered rainfall continuing over Jammu.
The weather office has also forecast isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph in parts of Jammu division during this period.
The Meteorological Department has urged people to stay updated about the latest forecasts and avoid unnecessary exposure during thunderstorms and intense rainfall.
Authorities and residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain prepared for sudden changes in weather, particularly where heavy rainfall could affect roads, slopes, streams and other infrastructure.
The department said the weather conditions are expected to improve gradually after the current spell, but isolated rainfall and thunderstorms may continue in parts of the Union Territory over the following days.
