Democrats have wrested control of the US Congress from Republicans, securing majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in a stunning electoral setback for President Donald Trump.
The outcome marks a significant shift in the balance of power in Washington and represents a major rebuke to Trump and his administration.
Counting continued through Tuesday night, with results in several closely contested races still awaited. Some contests may not be decided until Wednesday or later.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats were contested in the midterm elections. Voters in 36 states also went to the polls to elect governors.
