Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal at a high-profile ceremony scheduled for 11 am on Friday at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground, marking the BJP’s historic rise to power in the state after decades of political struggle.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony, which is being viewed as a major political milestone for the BJP in eastern India.

The ceremony coincides with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, adding cultural significance to the event. BJP leaders described the occasion as the beginning of a “new political era” in West Bengal.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah formally announced Suvendu Adhikari’s name as the BJP legislature party leader on Friday following a closed-door meeting of newly elected MLAs and senior party leaders.

“The BJP legislature party has unanimously elected Suvendu Adhikari as its leader,” Shah told party workers and supporters.

Soon after his election, Adhikari met Governor R N Ravi at Lok Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the government. He was accompanied by senior BJP leaders including Dilip Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee and Tapas Roy.

Speaking after being chosen as the leader of the legislature party, Adhikari thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Amit Shah, party workers, and voters across the state for reposing faith in him.

Party leaders said the new government would prioritise governance reforms, industrial development, employment generation, infrastructure expansion, and strengthening law and order.

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the BJP secured a sweeping victory by winning 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats, bringing an end to its 15-year rule in the state.

Several senior BJP and NDA leaders arrived in Kolkata ahead of the ceremony, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president JP Nadda, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar expressed confidence that West Bengal would move towards becoming “Sonar Bangla” under the leadership of Suvendu Adhikari and the new BJP government.

“Under Suvendu da’s leadership, we will work towards building a prosperous and developed Sonar Bangla,” Majumdar said.

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to witness the presence of thousands of BJP workers, supporters, cultural personalities and political leaders from across the country. (Inputs from Agencies)
