Panic gripped the Parigam area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district after reports emerged that meat from an allegedly rabies-infected bovine animal had been sold among locals, prompting health authorities to launch an emergency anti-rabies vaccination drive.
The incident triggered widespread concern across the locality, with dozens of residents rushing to nearby health centres for medical consultations, precautionary treatment, and anti-rabies vaccination following public advisories issued by the health department.
Officials said a formal FIR has been registered and an investigation initiated to ascertain the facts surrounding the alleged sale and distribution of the suspected meat. Authorities are also probing whether mandatory health and veterinary safety protocols were violated during the slaughtering process.
Medical experts, while acknowledging public anxiety, urged residents not to panic and emphasized that timely medical intervention considerably lowers the risk of infection.
“We received information yesterday that suspected contaminated meat had been consumed by some locals. We immediately initiated a vaccination drive, and so far 108 people have been vaccinated,” said Dr. Jureeda, Medical Officer at PHC Parigam.
“We used mosque announcements and ambulances to spread awareness among the public. Since the meat was cooked, the chances of transmission are comparatively lower. People should remain cautious but avoid panic,” she added.
Residents said the reports created fear and uncertainty among families, particularly those who had consumed or handled the suspected meat.
Meanwhile, locals have urged the district administration and health authorities to ensure a transparent investigation, strict action against those responsible, and adequate medical support for affected residents.
They also called for stronger awareness campaigns on zoonotic diseases, food safety measures, and veterinary screening to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored and all necessary preventive measures are being taken while investigations continue.
