Police in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district have arrested two persons for allegedly extorting Rs 24,000 from a man by threatening to falsely implicate him in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
According to police, the case came to light after Ajaz Ahmad Shah, son of Mohd Maqbool and a resident of Pethi Nambal Mattan, approached Police Station Srigufwara with a complaint alleging that the accused had demanded money from him and threatened to frame him in a false NDPS case if he failed to comply.
Police said a preliminary verification of the complaint found that the complainant was not involved in any such case. Following the verification, a case was registered at Police Station Srigufwara under FIR No. 68/2026, invoking Sections 308(2)(6), 318(4) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
During the course of the investigation, police identified the two accused as Muzafar Ahmad Mir, son of Ghulam Mohd Mir, a resident of Veer Nowbugh, Bijbehara, and Jan Mohd Wagay, son of Gh. Rasool, a resident of Pethi Nambal Mattan.
Both accused were subsequently arrested in connection with the case, police said.
The investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged extortion and to determine whether any other persons were involved.
Police have reiterated that threats to falsely implicate individuals in criminal cases, particularly under stringent laws such as the NDPS Act, will be dealt with strictly in accordance with law.
