Heavy rainfall on Tuesday triggered mudslides and shooting stones at multiple locations along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) in Udhampur district, prompting authorities to divert traffic through the downtube as a precautionary measure.
According to traffic officials, the affected locations include Sharda Mata Mandir, Tharad, Bali Nallah and Kheri along the uptube stretch of the highway. Continuous rainfall caused mudslides and falling stones, posing a serious risk to motorists.
In view of the prevailing conditions, traffic has been temporarily diverted through the downtube to ensure the safety of commuters while clearance operations continue.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has deployed men and machinery to remove the debris and restore normal traffic movement at the earliest.
Authorities have advised commuters to drive cautiously, follow traffic advisories and avoid unnecessary travel through the affected stretch until restoration work is completed. Further updates on the highway status are awaited.
