A Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel was killed after militants opened fire on security forces during a cordon and search operation (CASO) in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag district on Wednesday, officials said.

According to a senior police official, the operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

Acting on the information, teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Special Operations Group (SOG), and other security forces cordoned off the locality and launched a search operation. During the operation, the hiding militants opened indiscriminate fire on the security personnel, triggering a brief exchange of gunfire.

Police personnel Ashiq Hussain sustained critical injuries in the initial exchange of fire. He was immediately shifted to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, the official said.

The operation was still in progress at the time of filing this report, with additional reinforcements deployed to strengthen the cordon and prevent the militants from escaping.

Senior security officials are closely monitoring the situation, while the area remains under a tight security cordon. A comprehensive search operation is underway.
