Srinagar Police on Saturday claimed to have solved a blind murder case within six hours of the recovery of an unidentified body, leading to the arrest of a mother and son allegedly involved in the crime from Kupwara district.
According to a police spokesperson, Police Station Khanyar received information on July 30, 2026, about an unidentified body wrapped in gunny bags lying in the Babademb Canal beneath Baba Dawood Khakhi Bridge in Khanyar. Following the discovery, an FIR (No. 49/2026) was registered under Sections 103 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was launched.
Given the seriousness of the case, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted under the supervision of senior officers to investigate the murder.
The spokesperson said that sustained investigation and corroboration of evidence led police to identify the accused as Haleema Bano and her son, Moomin Ahmad, originally residents of Machil in Kupwara, who had been residing as tenants in Mughal Mohalla, Rainawari.
“After committing the crime, both accused fled Srinagar in an attempt to evade arrest. However, Srinagar Police meticulously pursued all available leads and successfully traced and apprehended them from Lolab in Kupwara within hours of the recovery of the body,” the spokesperson said.
During the investigation, the deceased was identified as Nazir Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat and a resident of Kalantpora, Hawal.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Bhat was allegedly murdered inside the accused’s rented accommodation following a financial dispute. The accused subsequently disposed of the body in the Babademb Canal in an attempt to conceal the crime and destroy evidence, police said.
The spokesperson added that several incriminating articles linked to the commission of the offence have been recovered. Further investigation is underway to determine whether any other individuals were involved and to complete all legal formalities.
Police said the swift detection of the blind murder case within six hours of the recovery of the body reflects the professionalism, coordinated efforts, and commitment of Srinagar Police in ensuring the prompt investigation of serious crimes and bringing those responsible to justice.
