A Village Defence Guard (VDG) member was killed and another critically injured after a fellow VDG member allegedly opened fire following a scuffle in the remote Pancheri area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Friday, officials said.
The incident took place when the VDG members were reportedly travelling towards the Damnot police post, officials said.
According to preliminary information, Surjeet Singh, a resident of Sasri Damnot, allegedly opened fire on his colleagues following an altercation. The firing resulted in the death of Baldev Singh, while Romesh Singh sustained critical injuries.
The injured VDG member was immediately shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, a police team rushed to the spot and launched efforts to apprehend the accused, officials said.
Police have not yet established the exact circumstances that led to the altercation or the sequence of events preceding the firing.
Officials said efforts were underway to arrest the accused, while further investigation is being conducted to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident.
