Kishtwar observed a complete bandh on Thursday as anger and grief swept across the district following the death of a 14-year-old girl from the Chatroo area. Shops, markets and other commercial establishments remained closed as residents demanded justice and stringent action against anyone found responsible for the circumstances leading to her death.
The shutdown reflected growing public outrage over the case, with people calling for a fair, transparent and time-bound investigation and demanding that the guilty be dealt with strictly under the law.
According to information available, the minor, who belonged to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community, died while she was being shifted from Kishtwar to a hospital in Doda after her condition reportedly became critical.
The case has assumed a serious dimension following allegations that the girl was repeatedly sexually abused by a schoolteacher. There are also allegations of a forced or attempted termination of pregnancy, after which her health reportedly deteriorated sharply.
The allegations have intensified public concern and prompted demands for a comprehensive investigation into every aspect of the case, including the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse, the subsequent medical treatment and the events that ultimately led to the girl’s death.
Authorities are expected to establish the complete sequence of events through the ongoing investigation and determine the responsibility of all those involved.
The bandh brought normal commercial activity across Kishtwar to a standstill, with traders and residents extending their support to the demand for justice.
People expressed deep anguish over the death of the minor and stressed that the case requires more than a routine investigation. They demanded that the authorities ensure that no individual found responsible is allowed to escape accountability.
The protesters also called for stronger mechanisms to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse, particularly in remote and vulnerable communities.
The incident has raised broader concerns over child safety and the effectiveness of mechanisms meant to identify, report and prevent abuse.
Residents have urged the administration and law-enforcement agencies to strengthen awareness programmes, improve reporting mechanisms and ensure prompt intervention whenever allegations involving minors come to light.
