Police have registered a case against five shopkeepers for allegedly obstructing pedestrian and vehicular movement at the busy Jahangir Chowk in Srinagar.
The action was taken by Police Station Shaheed Gunj after a routine patrol detected matting material allegedly placed on the road outside several shops, officials said. The material was reportedly occupying public road space and creating inconvenience for pedestrians as well as motorists.
Police said encroachments and unauthorised placement of material on roads can severely affect traffic movement at busy commercial junctions. Such obstructions can contribute to congestion, inconvenience to commuters and an increased risk of accidents.
Following the inspection, Shaheed Gunj Police registered FIR No. 72/2026 under Section 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the shopkeepers concerned.
An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged obstruction and establish the role of those involved.
The police action comes as part of efforts to maintain smooth traffic movement and ensure that public roads and pedestrian spaces remain free from unauthorised obstructions.
Police have urged shopkeepers, traders and members of the public to refrain from placing goods, construction material, mats or other items on roads and other public spaces in a manner that obstructs movement.
Authorities have also appealed to commercial establishments to cooperate with law-enforcement agencies and follow regulations concerning the use of public spaces.
With Jahangir Chowk witnessing heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement, officials said maintaining clear roadways is essential for traffic management, public convenience and road safety.
