Examiner Bureau | Srinagar:

Automobile retail in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a strong 42.84 per cent year-on-year growth in August 2026, with 21,788 vehicles sold compared to 15,253 units during the same month last year, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) J&K.

The growth was broad-based across all major categories, with passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, tractors and commercial vehicles registering substantial increases. The construction equipment segment recorded the highest percentage growth, albeit from a small base.

Passenger vehicle retail rose 54.81 per cent, with sales increasing to 6,191 units in August 2026 from 3,999 units in August 2025.

Two-wheeler sales, which constitute the largest segment of the automobile market in the Union Territory, also recorded significant growth of 36.28 per cent, rising to 12,579 units from 9,230 units a year earlier.

Three-wheeler retail registered a 64.68 per cent increase, with 1,655 units sold against 1,005 units in August 2025.

Commercial vehicle sales also remained on an upward trajectory, rising 29.23 per cent to 977 units from 756 units during the corresponding period last year.

The construction equipment segment recorded the highest year-on-year growth at 116.67 per cent, with sales more than doubling from 18 units in August 2025 to 39 units in August 2026.

Tractor sales also remained strong, increasing 41.63 per cent to 347 units from 245 units a year earlier.

The performance across commercial vehicles, tractors and construction equipment points to continued demand from sectors linked to transportation, agriculture, construction and broader economic activity.

On a month-on-month basis, total automobile retail increased from 21,124 units in July 2026 to 21,788 units in August, representing growth of around 3.1 per cent.

While the monthly increase was relatively modest compared with the sharp annual rise, dealers said the overall market remained on a positive trajectory.

FADA J&K Chairperson Sanjay Aggarwal described the August performance as encouraging, saying the 42.84 per cent annual growth reflected stronger consumer confidence and improving economic activity across the Union Territory.

“We are particularly encouraged to see that growth has been recorded across all major segments,” Aggarwal said, pointing to the performance of passenger vehicles and two-wheelers as well as the growth recorded in three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and tractors.

The automobile industry is now looking towards the upcoming festive and marriage seasons to sustain the momentum.

With Navratras, Dussehra, Dhanteras and Diwali traditionally associated with increased consumer spending, dealerships are expecting a rise in enquiries, showroom visits and vehicle purchases in the coming months.

Passenger vehicles and two-wheelers are expected to benefit particularly from festive and marriage-related demand, while commercial vehicles and three-wheelers could see increased purchases as economic and commercial activity gathers pace.

Dealers across J&K are preparing for higher customer footfall, with manufacturers and dealerships expected to roll out festive campaigns, financing options and other purchase incentives.

Aggarwal, however, maintained a cautiously optimistic outlook, saying the combination of the festive and marriage seasons could help sustain the strong year-on-year momentum and offset some of the recent month-on-month softness.

The August figures, he said, indicate that automobile demand in J&K is gaining strength across both personal mobility and commercial segments, providing a positive signal for the wider consumer and economic environment in the Union Territory.
