Agencies | Tehran/Washington:
US President Donald Trump has warned of possible further action against Iran, saying that “very soon, you’ll see things happening” as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high.
Speaking to reporters, Trump also said the United States could “blow up Iran” if efforts to reach an agreement fail. His remarks came as Iran said it had received a formal US response to its proposal aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conveyed the US response to President Masoud Pezeshkian and the Cabinet, according to Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani. Details of Washington’s response have not been publicly disclosed.
The proposal was communicated through mediators, including Qatar, as Tehran seeks a framework for ending hostilities and restoring shipping through the strategic waterway. Reuters reported that the main point of disagreement in the discussions has been the sequencing of steps to be taken by the two sides.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” that Iran may have played a role in a security incident near RAF Fairford, a US-run airbase in Gloucestershire.
British authorities had arrested five men following reports of suspicious activity involving vehicles near the base. The investigation is continuing, and the allegation of an Iranian connection has been publicly attributed to Burnham; Iranian authorities have denied involvement.
The incident has added another layer to tensions between Iran and Western governments amid the continuing conflict.
In the Gaza Strip, at least seven Palestinians were reported killed and more than 10 wounded in Israeli attacks on Wednesday, according to Palestinian and media reports.
WAFA reported that six Palestinians were killed and more than 10 injured in an Israeli strike targeting a vehicle in the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood of Gaza City. Other reports put the death toll at at least seven, including a journalist.
The latest casualties were reported amid continuing violence despite a ceasefire that has been in place for nearly a year. Accounts of the ceasefire and its alleged violations remain contested by the parties involved.
With Iran reviewing Washington’s response, diplomatic efforts remain focused on finding a framework that could reduce hostilities and restore the movement of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
At the same time, Trump’s latest remarks, the investigation surrounding RAF Fairford and continuing violence in Gaza underline the broader regional tensions surrounding the conflict.
The immediate focus remains on Iran’s response to the US proposal and whether the two sides can overcome disagreements over the sequence and conditions for any potential agreement.
