Magnitude 4.9 Earthquake Hits Afghanistan, Tremors Felt in Kashmir

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Afghanistan early Monday, sending light tremors across parts of Kashmir, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The earthquake occurred at 1:57:24 am IST at a depth of 220 kilometres, with the epicentre located at 36.602°N latitude and 71.084°E longitude in Afghanistan. The NCS has classified the earthquake as a reviewed event.

The epicentre was located approximately 73 kilometres southeast of Fayzabad, according to the seismic monitoring agency.

Given its considerable depth, the earthquake was classified as a deep-focus event. Tremors were nevertheless reported in parts of Kashmir, although the intensity of shaking varied across locations and was not immediately available.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property following the earthquake.

Authorities and seismic monitoring agencies continued to monitor the situation for any further developments.
