Nine MGNREGA workers were killed after a speeding car reportedly lost control and rammed into workers engaged in roadside work in Punjab’s Sangrur district on Sunday, according to media reports.
The accident occurred on the Lehragaga-Jakhal road near Chotian village, where a group of workers, including men and women, were engaged in roadside work when the vehicle veered towards them and struck several people.
The collision left multiple workers injured. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Senior Medical Officer Dr Vinod Kumar said the hospital had received eight people following the incident. “An incident occurred around 3:30 pm. Eight people have been brought to the hospital. One person was brought dead, five are stable and two have been referred to another hospital,” he said.
The discrepancy between the initial hospital figures and the subsequently reported death toll could not be reconciled from the available information.
Further details about the victims and the circumstances leading to the crash were awaited.
