Veteran actress Shabana Azmi has opened up about her relationship with religion, saying that while she identifies as a Muslim and appreciates the cultural aspects of Islam, she does not actively practise the faith.
In a recent interview on the Indian International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) YouTube channel, Azmi discussed her religious identity, her upbringing and her marriage to renowned lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar, who has openly identified as an atheist.
Reflecting on her personal beliefs, the actress explained that identifying with a religion does not necessarily mean actively following its rituals and practices. She expressed her view that religion should remain a matter of individual choice rather than an obligation imposed by society.
Azmi, known for her outspoken views on social and cultural issues, has often spoken about the importance of independent thinking and respecting differing perspectives. Her latest remarks highlight the distinction between religious identity, cultural heritage and personal belief.
The actress’s comments have once again brought attention to the broader conversation about faith, individual freedom and the ways people relate to religion in contemporary society.
