Agencies | Islamabad: Fresh diplomatic momentum is building around a possible second round of talks between the United States and Iran, with Pakistan once again emerging as a key intermediary, according to senior diplomatic sources in Washington and Islamabad.
Sources indicate that preparations for the next round of negotiations have entered an advanced stage, with both sides informally agreeing to continue discussions either in Islamabad or at a neutral venue such as Geneva. While logistical details are still being finalised, there is growing urgency to convene the talks within the next two days.
Pakistan, which played a crucial behind-the-scenes role in earlier engagements, is now actively promoting what insiders describe as the “Islamabad peace deal.” Diplomatic channels between Washington and Tehran are being leveraged to fast-track a breakthrough, positioning Islamabad as a stabilising force amid escalating regional tensions.
At the core of the renewed push is a cautious but shared willingness to find a face-saving resolution. Sources suggest that US President Donald Trump is keen to bring the conflict to a close and secure diplomatic gains ahead of his upcoming international engagements, including a scheduled visit to China in May.
Tehran, meanwhile, is signalling conditional openness to further dialogue, seeking concrete assurances that would allow it to project any agreement as a strategic victory domestically. Diplomats describe the evolving approach on both sides as an attempt to shape a “win-win formula,” despite deep-rooted mistrust.
Importantly, draft frameworks and records from previous Islamabad-based discussions have already been shared with leadership circles in both capitals and are currently under review. Efforts are underway to build internal consensus before formal negotiations resume.
Iran has also reportedly consulted key allies, including Russia and China, highlighting the broader geopolitical stakes surrounding the talks. Washington, on its part, has conveyed readiness to engage regardless of the venue.
While uncertainties remain, diplomatic signals suggest that a fresh round of US–Iran engagement could be imminent, marking a critical opportunity for de-escalation in the region.
