Agencies | New Delhi:

Authorities in Noida have indicated the possible involvement of an organised network behind the recent garment workers’ protests, revealing that multiple WhatsApp groups were created over the past two days using QR codes to mobilise workers.

Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh said the pattern suggests a “well-orchestrated syndicate” may be operating behind the unrest. “Workers are being added to groups through QR codes, indicating coordinated efforts to mobilise large numbers,” she noted.

The protests, which turned violent earlier this week, have led to the arrest of over 300 individuals, with seven FIRs registered so far. Police said those involved in instigating violence have been identified, and further action is underway, including investigations into possible funding sources.

The unrest was initially triggered by labour grievances, with workers demanding higher wages and improved working conditions. Protesters pointed to a significant wage gap compared to neighbouring Haryana, where minimum wages were recently increased, intensifying demands for a similar revision in Noida.

Workers have also alleged exploitation, including long working hours without overtime, lack of weekly offs, delayed payments, and inadequate safety and basic facilities—particularly for female workers.

What began as a peaceful demonstration escalated into violence in areas such as Phase-2 and Sector 60, with incidents of stone-pelting, vandalism, and vehicles—including police vans—being set on fire. The protests also caused major traffic disruptions at key routes like the Chilla Border, DND Flyway, and NH-9.

In response, the Uttar Pradesh government announced an interim wage hike of up to 21% and constituted a high-level committee to address ongoing concerns. Officials have also suggested that the protests may have been “hijacked” by external elements, with agencies probing potential organised interference through social media networks.

Police have intensified security across the Noida Commissionerate, conducting continuous route marches and deploying additional personnel to maintain law and order. Authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading rumours and to rely only on verified information, warning of strict action against those attempting to incite unrest.

Despite the tensions, officials said the situation is now under control, with efforts ongoing to engage stakeholders and restore normalcy. ( Input from PTI)
