Agencies | Washington:
US President Donald Trump has stated that Washington is fully prepared for military action against Iran if necessary, while expressing confidence that the ongoing standoff could still conclude with a “great deal.”
In an interview with CNBC, Trump struck a dual tone of caution and optimism as the deadline for the temporary ceasefire approaches. His remarks come just hours before the truce is set to expire on Wednesday, amid continued uncertainty over the future of US-Iran peace talks.
Trump reiterated that while the United States is ready to act militarily if negotiations fail, he remains hopeful about a diplomatic resolution. “It will end with a great deal with Iran,” he said, signalling that the administration is pursuing a strategy of sustained pressure alongside open channels for dialogue.
The US President also defended the ongoing blockade of Iranian ports, describing it as an effective tool in strengthening Washington’s negotiating position. The blockade has emerged as a major point of contention, with Tehran demanding the removal of maritime restrictions and accusing the US of escalating tensions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. The situation has also disrupted global shipping routes and energy markets.
On the ceasefire, Trump made it clear that he does not favour an extension beyond the current deadline. The two-week truce had temporarily halted weeks of hostilities and created space for diplomatic engagement. However, with both sides accusing each other of violations, the likelihood of an extension appears limited.
If no agreement is reached, the expiry of the ceasefire could significantly raise the risk of renewed military confrontation, further destabilising the already volatile region. (Input from Agencies)
