Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at 3:15 PM on May 10, after securing majority support in the newly elected Assembly, Lok Bhavan confirmed on Saturday.
The development came after Vijay met Governor R V Arlekar in Chennai and formally staked claim to form the government following intense post-poll negotiations and alliance-building efforts.
The TVK-led coalition crossed the majority mark after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) extended “unconditional support” to Vijay’s party, taking the alliance tally to 120 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
Confirming the support, TVK General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna described the development as a “victory for democratic forces” while displaying the letter of support issued by the VCK leadership.
Earlier, the Congress party had also extended support to the TVK, while making it clear that “communal forces” should remain outside the coalition framework.
Coalition Numbers Cross Majority Mark
With the latest support from alliance partners, the TVK-led bloc now commands a comfortable majority in the Assembly. The current numbers stand as follows:
- TVK – 107
- Congress – 5
- CPI – 2
- CPI(M) – 2
- VCK – 2
- IUML – 2
The combined strength of 120 seats places the coalition above the required majority mark of 118.
Hung Verdict Led to Political Negotiations
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election produced a hung verdict, triggering intense political negotiations among parties over government formation.
The TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, marking a major political breakthrough for Vijay in his debut Assembly election. The DMK secured 59 seats, while the AIADMK won 47 seats.
Other parties registered smaller but significant victories, with the PMK winning four seats, IUML two seats, CPI two seats and CPI(M) two seats. The BJP, DMDK and AMMK managed to secure one seat each.
Political observers described Vijay’s rise as one of the most dramatic developments in Tamil Nadu politics in recent decades, with the actor-turned-politician successfully transforming his mass popularity into electoral success.
The oath-taking ceremony on Sunday is expected to witness the presence of senior alliance leaders, political dignitaries and prominent personalities from the film industry and public life.
