Examiner Burau | Baramulla:
Water supply from a filtration plant in the Dawaran area of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was suspended after a dead dog was allegedly found inside the facility, triggering concerns over drinking water safety among local residents.
According to locals, the animal carcass was discovered within the filtration plant, prompting fears about the quality of water supplied to consumers in the area. Residents alleged that the facility lacked adequate protective covering and proper maintenance, allowing animals to gain access to the premises.
They further claimed that a similar incident had occurred in April last year when another dead dog was reportedly found inside the same filtration plant. Despite complaints raised at the time, residents said the facility remained uncovered and vulnerable to such incidents.
Officials from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department confirmed that water supply from the plant was immediately suspended after the matter came to light. A sanitation and cleaning operation was subsequently launched to ensure the safety of the water supply system.
An Executive Engineer of the PHE Sub-Division Uri said instructions had been issued for the thorough cleaning and sanitisation of the filtration plant before water supply is restored.
The official also revealed that a proposal has been submitted under the Union Territory Capex Budget for the installation of protective covers on uncovered filtration plants in Uri, particularly those susceptible to animal intrusion.
Meanwhile, residents have urged the district administration to deploy a medical team to the area as a precautionary measure and conduct health screenings for consumers who may have been affected.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding the maintenance and security of public water supply infrastructure in the region, with residents demanding long-term measures to prevent a recurrence.
